Outline to Manuscript to Publication

What is copyediting?

Copyediting helps turn an outline into a manuscript and a manuscript into a final product, such as an article, a dissertation, or a book. The copyeditor’s job is to identify and help remove errors and disfluencies. This can mean proofreading to catch typographical errors or assessing and critiquing organizational structures within the work to help promote the most clear and effective flow of ideas.

I think of my job as trusty sidekick: I want to help make sure that your ideas get to your readers. Sometimes that means clearing obstacles out of the way, like making sure that misspellings or sentence fragments don’t distract from your argument. Sometimes that means pruning away tangents or extraneous information so that the project stays focused. Sometimes that means helping you prioritize tasks so that you can tackle the main problems and get a manuscript out the door.

What kind of work does a copyeditor do?

Construction

You have an idea or an outline that you want to turn into a publishable piece of writing. I can help you set goals and deadlines, talk through the structure of a piece, and looks at drafts and pieces along the way.

Revision

You have a work that’s already gotten some feedback, from journal reviewers, committee members, or a potential publisher. I can help you integrate that feedback and complete a successful revision.

Proofreading

You have a completed manuscript that needs a last pass to get fresh eyes for typos, citations, section headings, etc. I can catch and fix mistakes before publication.

What kind of projects can a copy editor help with?

Dissertations and Masters Theses

I work with clients throughout the dissertation writing process. This includes providing support, structure, and feedback as clients take their first pass through dissertation chapters; helping clients integrate feedback from their committee into their work; and proofreading final drafts before they are submitted.

Articles

I work with clients who are beginning to try and translate their research into article helping to winnow down a plenitude of ideas to a single focus, identify strengths and weaknesses in an argument, or even provide coaching about finding a journal that is a good fit. Later in the process, I help integrate feedback from editors and peer reviewers, match stylistic guidelines to a journal, and provide proofreading for final drafts.

Book Manuscripts

I work with clients who are developing new book manuscripts or working to adapt their dissertation research into a manuscript. In the latter case, I often specifically work with clients on the transition from dissertation-style writing to a book format.

Grant Proposal

I work with clients to help fit the specificities of their own projects into the constraints of the grant proposal format and to proofread grant applications.

What people are saying

"My discussions with Abi have enabled me to gain better insight about how to write and why I might want to write. My greatest challenge in writing is converting good ideas and insights (which I have in good enough supply) into disciplined writing as a practice (which is harder for me to accomplish. Abi was patient and compassionate in how she related both to my curiosity in pursuing new lines of analysis and with the task of holding me accountable for following through on what I started in my prose."

"Abigail Rosenthal’s copy editing services are paramount to my academic success, providing me the focused criticism to allow me to finish projects. She has helped me articulate and refine my intellectual contributions, linking them to larger cultural and historical phenomena, all the while respecting my voice as a writer. I have worked with Rosenthal on my dissertation, numerous grant proposals, and a journal article from stages ranging from idea development to final draft proofreading.  Rosenthal consistently provides astute observation, theoretically informed feedback, and insightful rewriting suggestions. Rosenthal does so with professionalism, tact, and quick turnaround. I have recommended and continue to refer her services to
numerous academics, many of whom now also work with her."

"I have been working with Abigail for several years now, and she has helped my writing tremendously. She has helped me to see where I am implicitly making arguments and has helped me to make them more explicit.  She has helped me work through ideas, transitions, language, and restructuring. Abigail can identify and offer suggestions to fix problems in a text much faster than I can. Overall, working with her has strengthened my work and has made the process of writing less scary and alienating.

I wanted to work with a copyeditor to get a fresh pair of eyes on my dissertation. It was really helpful to have someone else read it over to make sure it made sense, to suggest edits to make the language clearer & more comprehensible, and of course to catch basic formatting and typological errors."

"If one has the funds, I strongly recommend a copyeditor when one understands their needs. For me, a copyeditor is like my writing therapist–outside of diagnostic issues (grammatical, etc.) edits, a copyeditor (you) is really helping me managing the work of writing by working with my writing. I've heard some people frown on copyeditors out of fear that whatever submitted writing is not their own work. And while that could be true, I've never fully accepted all edits on anything I've ever written, anyway, and I have yet to be provided the tools or time to work through my own writing in the way that I currently am. So know exactly what you need and see if that could be supported"

"I got in touch with Abigail when I was looking for editorial support for my first academic monograph. At the time, I was shaping my dissertation into a book manuscript, and I felt apprehensive about the process. After re-drafting a few of the chapters, I knew I wanted to produce a book that would be relevant to other specialists in my subfield and would also interest general readers in my discipline… but I couldn’t manage to commit to its larger picture. Abigail was incredibly helpful at providing broad-strokes thematic suggestions, and also recommending small changes that clarified my argument. She really cuts to the key points of a text and then gives structural recommendations to make them sing, without sacrificing theory or style. I could not have finished this project without her deft, sensitive edits."

"Abigail was crucial in helping me finish my book manuscript. She consistently provided incisive and expeditious feedback on key concepts driving the book, arc and argumentation, and mechanics. Her training in anthropology was especially helpful in both the fine-tuning of my methods and argumentation. Knowing that she would be reviewing chapters with an incisive eye as I went along created essential space for me to simply write – and complete – a successful draft of my manuscript, which landed a book contract. I highly recommend Abigail’s editing support for anyone hoping to complete small, medium, or large-scale academic writing projects."

Rates & Timetables

Rates are dependent on the length of the project, which I typically measure in terms of page length, accounting for re-reads for multiple revisions. I am happy to provide a quote for a project, based on my estimate of how long it will take, which works better with many people’s budgets. At an hourly rate, I charge $35/hour for proofreading, $40/hour for medium copyediting, and $45/hour for heavy copyediting.

Please contact me to discuss timetables. My turn around for an article or chapter (<50 pages) is usually within two weeks. I am happy to work with clients to meet external deadlines like dissertation filings and journal deadlines.
